Observation Narrative
The plot documents low herbaceous vegetation of a very large (ca. 7 ha) drawdown zone at the upper end of the Carvin's Cove reservoir. Because of microtopographic variation and variations in flooding depth and length, there was considerable variation in vegetation composition and species richness, although Eragrostis hypnoides was strongly dominant everywhere. This plot captures a relatively high edge, ca. 50-60 m north of the current water level in the reservoir, which had been drawn down for some time. At this site, Eleocharis acicularis dominated the early development of the stand, followed by Eragrostis hypnoides, and finally by Panicum dichotomiflorum var. dichotomiflorum..
